3 Click the name of the adjustment you want, and the Adjustments panel appears with the options for that item (if you're using CS3 or earlier, you'll see a dialog box instead). For this example, I'm using a Levels adjustment layer.

4 After making your adjustments, click on the tab for the Layers panel to switch back to the list of layers (in CS3 or earlier, click OK in the dialog box). I'll go over the options available in the Adjustments panel shortly.

5 In the Layers panel, there are now two layers: a Background layer and the adjustment layer you just created. The Background layer is your photograph. When you open a photo for the first time in Photoshop, there will always be a Background layer.
